Large enterprise networks today are too large, too dynamic and too complex for the kinds of management solutions that attempt to assemble a coherent view of infrastructure operations and their impact on application performance and business processes by aggregating data from numerous infrastructure elements, agents and probes into a monolithic master database.
Assessing application performance at Layer 4 and then providing a ‘Unified View’ of the network correlating all of the data is the key to assessing performance.
Examining the composition of application response time helps identify where the slowness comes from. Taking the view from Layer 4 identifies if the slowness is the result of the SYN/ACK/SYNACK handshake, the first response from the server, the first response from the application, network transport time or network retransmissions due to packet loss.
From this data we can make substantive judgments as to what corrective actions should be considered.
